April 2004 --

A computer worm referred to as Gaobot, is currently infecting computers across the Internet.

This worm takes advantage of several vulnerabilities announced and fixed by Microsoft at least 30 days ago.  It can also use backdoors created by the Beagle and MyDoom families of worms.

The early variants of Gaobot are not particularly dangerous, but more damaging versions are likely to be on the way soon.

Infection is easily avoided by using an anti-virus tool like Norton Anti-Virus or MacAfee, and making sure that all Windows computers have the latest updates from Microsoft via the Auto Update feature.

These procedures will also protect you from the Sasser worm as well.
